Wisdom -- something not often found in today’s culture (3/1/09)

NOTE: The following message and the related Scriptures below, can be utilized along with: A Suggested Format for Home Worship

“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters….” [Isaiah 55:1-2]

Like others, I have a popular website home page. And, without fail there are a continual barrage of evolution inspired “news” pieces, highlighting the latest [so-called] “discoveries.” Today’s was: “Fossil skull of giant toothy seabird found in Peru.” And, as usual, the so-called “scientific” finding, affixed a specific calendar date as to the extinct animal’s living days. This one was given “up to 10 million years ago.”

It never ceases to amaze me how these so-called “scientists” are so sure of themselves. Without batting eyelashes, these “scientists” are all over the historic board past, affixing certain ancient dates to their newly discovered fossil remains. Yet in their human wisdom, they only conjecture what they are convinced is reality according to their unproven [flawed and fallacious] theory of evolution. Please refer to past topical message:
Evolution -- A "Pseudo 'Science'" -- Rejected by Jesus Christ (2/26/06)

It is no small wonder why our culture becomes so screwed up – just one example in the area of money [finance]:

I came across a New York Post news piece describing a Democrat who was having problems with his political party’s president huge spending spree:
Top Dem: O’s Budget Needs a ‘Scrub.’”

It truly is refreshing to read something like this – especially when the majority political party of our country fell head over heels and with grease lightening speed voted in President Obama’s humongous debt wrenching spending initiative. And, they did this, without the common sense sanity of reading the multi hundred page bill and rationally putting it through reasonable scrutiny. What the one political party did, was to force through both houses of Congress a budget breaking, debt ridden spending bill – and then have the rationalizing [dishonest] crust, to call it a “Stimulus Bill.”

My point? The point being, there was no godly wisdom considered when pushing through a huge spending bill which was [and is] obviously flawed and will have deep seeded confining implications for the next generation or two. When the Divine revelation of God’s wisdom is not sought after and followed, there will be negative ramifications and consequences. Our country as a nation has been spreading itself too thinly, expecting foreigners to buy up our nation’s accumulated debt. As a result, our nation is putting itself into financial bondage and slavery:

The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender [Proverbs 22:7]

The Hebrew and Christian Scriptures speak of a Divine “Wisdom” as opposed to a “Worldly Wisdom:”

Worldly wisdom [defined by Webster] is that “wisdom” which is the “carnal policy of men, their craft and artifices in promoting their temporal interests.” This same temporal wisdom is termed "earthly, physical, demon-like," as opposed to the wisdom of God, which comes from "above." [James 3:13-18 ; 1 Corinthians 2:1-2]

True wisdom is that which finds its expression in the true God:

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. [Proverbs 1:7]

Webster defines [true] wisdom:

"In Scripture theology, wisdom is true religion; godliness; piety; the knowledge and fear of God, and sincere and uniform obedience to his commands. This is the wisdom which is from above." [Psalm 90 ; Job 28]

The major mistake of the culture:

The chief mistake of any culture is that of rejecting the Lord of Life and Creator of all. [Acts 17:16-34] Ignoring and / or rejecting the One who created all and to whom we must give account, is not only folly but arrogance that will have damning eternal implications. When Triune God Almighty is not revered above all else, calamity is sure to follow. [Psalm 9:17] The God of human history will not be ignored and mocked. He renders to his creation the free moral will to accept Him or to reject Him. [John 3:14-21 ; Luke 16:19-31; Matthew 25:31-46]

May the Triune God grant, by his grace and mercy, those who have ears to hear, the understanding; will and, to do, of all of His good pleasure. Amen.

Christ's disciples will not meet the approval of the culture because they are under the influence of Divine Revelation (2/22/09)

NOTE: The following message and the related Scriptures below, can be utilized along with: A Suggested Format for Home Worship

“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters….” [Isaiah 55:1-2]

I have long since come to the conclusion that [for the most part] it is impossible to carry on genuine communication with certain individuals. I learned from family upbringing; personal experience and through various academic endeavors, that communication is a two-way street. I can converse [talk] or correspond [write] but no matter how clear and concise that communication may be, there are often the pitfalls of disconnect.

I may be genuine in my desire to communicate something as the "Sender," but the person on the "Receiving" end, may either be too busy to listen or, when attempting to comprehend my sent message, may be entertaining a whole different worldview. Even in the best of family relationships, proper (sent and understood) communication, often goes awry. I suppose, that in itself, is a very good reason to keep on conversing and continuing to listen. Serious and successful listening takes time, and one's attention. What often kills good listening skills are umpteen distractions, which, at times, are legion.

As a parent I taught my young children the little "dittie," -- "Learn to listen so that you can listen; so that you can learn." [I even put this short sentence to a tune and would sing it to them]

A major root reason why non Christians cannot "hear" and understand what is being communicated, by some Christians and the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures:

Christ had one world view. And that view all revolved around himself. [John 18:36-37 ; Colossians 1:13-20] Christ stated this certain reality when he told the crowd:

“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it." [Gospel of Matthew 7:13-29]

In the Gospel of John, Chapter 10, Christ offered a clear and concise explanation of what that "gate" [door] was all about. In fact that "Door" was clearly explained by Christ, to be Himself. [John 10:7 ; John 14:6] He is the very entrance (door) to life eternal as opposed, to death eternal. [Luke 16:19-31 ; Matthew 25:31-46]

The soul that follows the Christ of history will naturally, be misunderstood and persecuted:

Present day culture is rife with political correctness and expressions of multiculturalism that war against not only common sense, traditional morality, but that which is, of, Christ. [Romans 12:1-2] The God of all human history allowed Himself to be born; to live a perfect life; suffer; die and rise from the dead for His creation. [Philippians 2:5-11 ; Romans 14:9] He never was, nor is, confined by the perimeters of sinful culture. Christ did not offer rose colored eyeglasses to His followers. Although He promised them heaven for their belief and commitment, [John 3: 14-21 ; Matthew 7:13-29] they were warned that they would suffer and be persecuted because of Him. [John 15:18-25 ; 2 Timothy 3:12]

Those who are Christ's are under the influence of His Divine Revelation:

Those who are genuinely Christ's disciples, will have no qualms as to His role in human history. [Colossians 1:13-20] Neither will they be swayed by the culture that attempts to make them less than rational. With the global proliferation of news "on the spot," I witness sinful culture's inbreeding. In a desperate attempt to make "man the measure of all things," the masses are being beguiled with the embrace of pseudo science. "Evolution" is their false god of process. Their reception of this wild belief [partially] justifies for them an unproven flawed and false system of persuasion in which they think they can escape the Triune God of human history. Why be beholden to Creator God and His Ten
Commandments when one is the product of primeval chance? [http://www.icr.org/] They will go out of their way to avoid the Triune God, at all costs. [Romans 1:18-32]

Friend, if some of the above describes you -- and if you cannot begin to conceive what I have communicated -- I can, as a Christian, understand. The Scriptures talk about the blindness of unbelief. [2 Corinthians 4:3-4] They also describe the inability on your part to clearly see and understand Divine Revelation. [1 Corinthians 2:14] But, by all means, don't let that discourage you. Do whatever you can to listen to this true God of which I have been describing. [Romans 10:17] Your soul is too much of priceless worth for you to turn a deaf ear.

Amen.

The gracious and sovereign disposition of Creator God, rewarding whom He pleases (2/15/09)

NOTE: The following message and the related Scriptures below, can be utilized along with: A Suggested Format for Home Worship

“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters….” [Isaiah 55:1-2]

When I was a child, as the Scriptures say, “I thought like a child.” When hearing and / or reading Christ’s Parable of the “Laborers in the Vineyard,” [Matthew 20:1-16] I had the mistaken idea that the prime emphasis of this parable were that souls could repent and come into God’s Kingdom [Heaven] at the last minute of their lives and that it did not make any difference to the Good Lord, whether they had been a believing Christian all their lives. What mattered most was that they were able to “squeak into heaven’s gate” and nevertheless be equally welcomed by Father, God.

As I have grown older, I have come to realize that this parable of Christ is not as it may seem. Its message significance is not about sinners about to crash on a jumbo jet only to have less than 30 seconds to make their peace with God. And, as a child, I thought (as a child) and was convinced that the imminence of certain death would bring sinful [unforgiven] sinners “around” so that within their last breathful moments they would be most apt and motivated to repent and believe the Gospel.

Upon hearing a description of the late Dr. James D. Kennedy about the massive Canary Islands airliner crash, I gave up on that childish belief. The plane’s black box recorder revealed that many passengers, upon impact, wailed in cursing and despair. Far from making their peace with God, most of these passengers entered an eternity afterlife, in the same way they had lived their unbelieving existence.

[Associated Press -- History's worst aviation accident turned on twists of fate – 3/27/02]

…….The collision, described in an Associated Press dispatch from March 30, 1977 as "a hellstorm of fire and death," killed all 248 people on the Dutch plane and 335 on the Pan Am flight, putting the number 583 into the world's almanacs and Guinness compilations under "world's worst." ….. [Associated Press -- History's worst aviation accident turned on twists of fate – 3/27/02]

The Main Character in the Parable is the Owner of the Vineyard:

The Parable of the "Workers in the Vineyard" opens with Christ stating: “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard…..”

The Parable ends with the words of the Vineyard Owner:

But he answered one of them and said, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what is yours and go your way. I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am good?’ So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few chosen.” [Matthew 20:13-16]

I believe that most Biblical scholars would agree that the meaning behind the “Owner” is that of the heavenly Father [God]. God seeks of His own to do His work. And when that work is completed, He rewards His laborers, accordingly. I say, “Accordingly,” – in respect to His gracious and sovereign wishes.

Other characters in the Parable: The workers:

Regarding the workers in the vineyard who had labored all day, [Matthew 20:8-12] when one of them stood in line behind a worker who had labored less, there was the expectation to be paid more [proportionately] since he had spent more time working in the vineyard. However, notice, again, the main character in this parable – [Matthew 20:8-16] The owner instructed his servants to reward those who had been hired last. It was the Owner’s own personal sovereign call. And, it was his choosing to pay those workers who labored less -- to give them the same amount that the other workers agreed to work for, when they started out in the vineyard early in the morning.

The difference of attitude and motive of the workers in the vineyard:

Two types of character [workers] labored in the vineyard. First, those who had made a binding agreement to work for so much money. Secondly, there were those who heard the vineyard owner’s call for more labor, and joined in the work – not expecting anything, but what would be the owner’s good will, to pay. It is assumed by some Biblical scholars that these workers could “represent” those Christians who live and work for the Lord with a pure motive and right spirit – whereas, those laborers who have been “along for the ride” from the “gitgo,” exhibit the "jealous brother syndrome" as personified in Christ’s parable of the “The Prodigal Son.”

What shines through this parable is the difference of attitude and motive of the two types of vineyard workers. One type worked for “hire.” The other type; out of willing spirit, free from personal gain or earthly ambition.

Christ’s Parables were [and, are] meant to be earthly stories that teach a spiritual [and, often, a heavenly] meaning:

One of Christ’s best know parables is "The Pharisee and the Publican." Again, as a child, I would confuse the title, and think of it as the “Pharisee and the Republican.” However, such is not the case by any means as the parable is [in more modern times & with more recent Bible translations] known as the "The Pharisee and the Tax Collector" Due to time constraints, perhaps, I can afford some separate topical sermon space to this popular parable. But suffice to say, those of you who wish to draw near to God and those of you who wish to be counted in heaven’s glory – you must come by way of Creator God, and His Christ. [John 3:14-21 ; Matthew 7:13-29]

You, whose sins vex and bother you – rejoice. That means that your conscience is not seared and is still alive. Your conscience bears witness to your better knowledge that your sins against God and your fellow man are grievous. A conscience full of vitality will not be content to ignore your sinful life and particular lifestyle, but will gravitate to mercy and forgiveness. Only in the Christ of history whose birth, life, suffering, death and resurrection will you find present complete relief and a life hereafter relief from your sins.

If your sins don’t bother you, you are most certainly in the worst of condition. You are like a blind, deaf and dumb man standing on a railroad track as the train approaches. Only the gracious disposition and sovereign will of God can make you aware of your hopeless condition so that you can become like that publican [tax collector] and cry out to the Triune God: “God, be merciful to me a sinner!” [Luke 18:9-14]

The Most Difficult Step of the “Grieving Process” (2/8/09)

NOTE: The following message and the related Scriptures below, can be utilized along with: A Suggested Format for Home Worship

“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters….” [Isaiah 55:1-2]

Shakespeare stated: “To err is human; to forgive, divine.” How true. There is no doubt whatsoever, that all people who live upon this earth; have lived, and will live, upon this earth, fit this Shakespearean description. [Romans 3:23 ; 5:12]

All people by nature are sinners. [Psalm 51:5 ; Romans 5:12] And without exception, all people err by wrongdoing. These “Transgressions” are against God and one’s fellow mankind; and they are either sins of commission and / or sins of omission. A thief sins, sins of commission; while, a person who allows a thief to steal, by turning a blind eye, sins the sin of omission.

There is the one exception, to those who have sinned, and that is, of course, the Lord Jesus Christ, who was born into our world and was sinless. [Hebrews 7:26 ; 1 Peter 2:22] His primary purpose in coming into our world was to be born, live a perfect life; suffer; be sacrificed for our sin; and rise from the dead, in order to defeat sin and death and pave the way for Divine forgiveness before a holy and just God, who must mete out divine justice and eternal punishment on account of human sin. [Matthew 25:31-46]

Christ came as the perfect, sinless “Lamb of God,” [John 1:29] to be slaughtered for our benefit – that those who believe and put their trust in Him, and His sacrifice for them, might be saved from the wrath of God and afforded life eternal, rather than death eternal. [John 3:14-21 ; 1 Thessalonians 1:10 ; John 3:36]

The tragedy that has taken place in our town of Bay City continues to have many reeling with anger and rage:

When a tragedy of this magnitude takes place -- there is immediate shock. All types of questions and voiced reactions arise. “How can this be? Why did this happen? This need not have happened. I hope those responsible are called to account.” One web comment expressed an angry and vengeful desire that those who were responsible are forced to share the same fate and demise as did the 93 year old WWII Vet. [“Autopsy: Bay City man froze inside his home”]

Most people can identify with the sad and pitiful end of one of our senior citizen residents. And, to be sure, it was pathetic. Some people who responded in nation wide online news report comment, made reference to their older family members, and how they could not imagine having them share the same fate of an old man who obviously did not realize that his electricity and furnace had shut off and that hypothermia was taking its toll upon his frail and aged body.

Common grief symptoms have been the experience of many who have heard or read about Marvin’s death:

I simplify and condense the “Grieving Process” into 4 words: (1) Shock (2) Anger (3) Denial (4) Acceptance. As one who attempts to help those who experience this common human grieving experience, I have learned not only from personal grieving experiences, but by practical experience and academic learning, that there are no tidy shortcuts to the grieving process. There are no time limitations. Everyone is different in his grieving experience. And, for those aging and disabled, these people may go for many years experiencing the various phases of shock; anger; denial and finally some semblance of acceptance.

The “Acceptance” part of the grieving experience is the most difficult:

It is very easy to be shocked. It is even easier to become angered. And, it is a natural human reaction to be in denial. That denial, often expressed, is: “Why me? This shouldn’t happen to me! It only happens to the other person!”

Several Sunday’s ago I posted an online “Words in Season” message that hammered home the message of “Forgiveness.” That message contained a short chapter of a book that dealt with, loving one’s enemy. This true story is a prime example of what Shakespeare meant, when he said: “……..to forgive, divine.”

The present necessity of forgiveness and its priceless implication (1/11/09)

It is my prayer that those in this town and those who have grieved in some way over Mr. Schur’s death, that we all could remind ourselves of the priceless need to reach that “acceptance stage.” And, an integral part of acceptance is the forgiveness aspect.

Those who read that topical "Words in Season" message several weeks ago – please read it again. And those not having done so, and are reading this – please read, ponder and reference the following Scriptures. Remember, Acceptance by way of forgiveness is for your personal ongoing benefit. It is, by far the best way to successfully grieve. Amen.

Who is my neighbor? -- With special reference to the (now) former Bay City resident (Marvin Schur) and his tragic death (2/1/09)

NOTE: The following message and the related Scriptures below, can be utilized along with: A Suggested Format for Home Worship

“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters….” [Isaiah 55:1-2]

The recent course of sad events have thrust this local small town community into a state of shock, bewilderment, frustration and anger over the needless and preventable death of one of our own senior citizens, whose 93 year old WWII Vet body, essentially “froze” to death because of a flawed and / or, [obviously] failed City Hall policy.

The news of Marvin Schur’s untimely and horrible death did not hit the national news circuit until at least a week after his actual hypothermia induced death, as was determined by a Michigan coroner.

Note: Please reference the following local commentary the same day of the first comprehensive public news of Mavin Schur’s death:
Bay City “Manager” fails to own up to his responsibility – blames others for WWII senior citizen’s untimely and horrible death (1/26/09)

City Hall damage control was quick to follow once some facts were divulged about Marvin’s death:

Bay City’s City Manager, Robert Belleman was quoted in the local Bay City Time’s newspaper as pointing the political finger at Chilson St. residents for not being neighborly enough to prevent Mr. Schur’s terrible death. As the knowledge of this WWII Vet’s health and circumstances began to unravel – and the [intended punitive] use of a local [city controlled] electric gismo type “Limiter,” became known, City Hall damage control quickly scrabbled to remove such other limiters from other city residents’ dwellings. One news report stated that [anonymous] “city officials” were going to review the present certain city policy so that a tragedy of this magnitude would never happen again.

It has also been said that Marvin may have suffered from some degree of dementia, and was hearing challenged. Someone stated that Marvin had recently suffered the loss of his wife who took care of paying the couple's bills. Added to these neighborly known realities, was that Marvin was not lacking the financial resources to make the back payments, as cash was supposed to have been found along side city bills, within his home.

This Christian pastor was greatly distressed and sickened by a death that need not have happened in the time and manner in which it did:
Upon looking at the mlive.com Bay City Times news report of 1/26/09 and reading how our [top paid] city manager was essentially laying the responsibility for Marvin’s death upon his neighbors, I pounded out the following local commentary. I then sent emails to the City Manager, Robert Belleman; nine Commission members; and, our Mayor, Charles, Brunner. My email was very short, as I included a link to the commentary [below] and strongly suggested that they take responsibility:

Local Commentary -- Bay City “Manager” fails to own up to his responsibility – blames others for WWII senior citizen’s untimely and horrible death (1/26/09)

“Who is my [our] neighbor?

The mlive.com town talk forum has [in part] been a place for city residents and others to vent their frustrations and anger over Mr. Schur’s death. One forum participant pointed out that our city manager on the one hand was blaming Chilson St. neighbors for Marvin’s preventable untimely and tragic death while not realizing that he was, also, [in a certain sense] Marvin’s neighbor. This person’s comment made not only common sense, but also, reflected Scriptural realities.

“…….The City Manager states that neighbors should have looked out for Mr. Schur. If this is a small community as is reported, then Mr. Belleman, you are a neighbor……” [Paraphrase]

I then chimed in with my forum response:

I hear you and share your sentiments. I remember in one of my sermons explaining the term: “Neighbor.” I went on to explain Christ summing up the Ten Commandments by saying: (1) ”Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind;” (2) “Love your neighbor as yourself.” [Paraphrase -- Gospel of Matthew 22:36-40]

I continued to say that our neighbor was that person who was within our grasp to help. Everyone can relate to Christ’s parable of the Good Samaritan. [Luke 10:25-37] And, as you so aptly remarked, our city manager was also Marvin’s neighbor. And, I would say, even more so than others, in that he is the “Manager” of the city -- he had even more opportunity to be this man’s “neighbor.” In his top notch highly paid, office, he had the time to see to it that an apparent out-dated and inhumane policy did not allow for particular extenuating [human] circumstances, such as sadly resulted in this WWII senior’s untimely, horrible and tragic death.

The poor man was 93 years of age. Someone said on this forum that his wife recently died and she took care of the bills. Someone also intimated on one of the news piece mlive.com Bay City Times’ articles that he could have been hard of hearing. Obviously he was homebound and didn’t spend the money that he was supposed to have had. And, he would not go out in the freezing cold to reset an electric type gismo.

The (often) failure of local [state & federal] “government” to not only reflect, but to effect genuine love for one’s neighbor:

I dare say that most politicians have no idea of Webster’s original meaning of “politics” because they have been so roily influenced by manipulation, money and lobbying, originating from special interest entities. Often the masses and disadvantaged are left out of government ethical consideration because certain influential personalities have learned to be adept and highly masterful in pulling politicians’ personal pandering strings. [Note: "Political Extortion" -- 2/19/07]

Also note: “Compassionless government is appalling government – And, what then, can be said of some Bay City government politicians & special interest personalities who fail to consider the poor?” (2/24/08)

In my lifetime I have witnessed a convoluted mixture of negative politics, -- so much so, that the following original Webster definition appears almost strange and Neanderthal. But nevertheless, this definition in my estimation is the (standard) route that current and future politicians should follow, if they have any intention of being honest and forthright in their quest to be genuine public servants:

POL'ITICS, n. The science of government; that part of ethics which consists in the regulation and government of a nation or state, for the preservation of its safety, peace and prosperity; comprehending the defense of its existence and rights against foreign control or conquest, the augmentation of its strength and resources, and the protection of its citizens in their rights, with the preservation and improvement of their morals. Politics, as a science or an art, is a subject of vast extent and importance. [Webster’s original dictionary]

Notice that I highlighted the parts of Webster’s definition that has to do with government’s responsibility for the safety and preservation [care] of its citizens. Our Bay City WWII Vet resident wasn’t afforded that! A taxpayer all his life, and Marvin came out on the short end of the exercise of local politics’ unethical practice of its designated responsible task to preserve and protect his very existence!

Human error and irresponsibility often is cited as “the” cause for accidents and death – But “what” is the ultimate “cause” for accidents, disease and death?

The ultimate cause of sin and death, disease and accidents is human sin. [Romans 5:12] That cause is well established and recorded in the pages of the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures. So often we flawed and sinful humans become so focused on direct “causes” that we fail to see the forest [ultimate] cause though the blame game trees. “Blame,” “responsibility” and root (ultimate) “cause” are, various descriptions and distinctions. And then, we could talk for hours upon hours, about the difference between the “Perfect” will of God and, the “Permissive” will of God.

We know from Scripture mankind’s fall into sin [Genesis 3] and that human sin separates us from the present and eternal love of God. [Romans 3:23] We also know that sin, as a highly infectious disease, has spread to all of humanity. [Romans 5:12] But thanks be to Creator God that he sent His only begotten Son to be the Savior for human sin. [John 3:14-21] Thank God that Christ came to be born a human being, and that by his birth, life, suffering, death and resurrection from the dead, He makes possible the forgiveness of sins before a holy, just and punishing God. [1 Corinthians 15 ; Acts 26:18 ; Colossians 1:14] May those of humble and repentant heart have ears to hear. [Matthew 7:13-29 ; Luke 15 ; Luke 18:9-14]

Finally:

Time has cut short this message about “Who is our neighbor,” and our responsibilities to our neighbor. In view of that and this last sad week, in Bay City’s history, I am thankful that our City Manager, Robert Belleman, Mayor, Charles Brunner and others at City Hall have instituted a safety net program via post office letter carriers, to keep watchful eyes over designated residences of those who need our neighborly and loving care.

To be sure, our City Manager is correct in assuming that neighbors should assist their [needy] neighbors in caring for themselves. However, I am sure that I am not alone as I would like to witness our City Manager taking some portion of moral personal responsibility for the sad and tragic death of one of our senior citizens.

Our City Manager may avoid personal responsibility by skillfully saying that “the ‘city’ takes responsibility.” He may try all he may, to hide behind a State Police investigative report and a city employee liability insurance plan. But that reclusive action, I am convinced, will not bode well (with city residents) for a continued city manager’s future here in Bay City. He should either step up to the plate, and at least take on some personal responsibility, or step down from his office and, resign.

PART 1 – The Christian Faith – What is meant by the Christian Faith? (10/12/08)

NOTE: The following message and the related Scriptures below, can be utilized along with: A Suggested Format for Home Worship

“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters….” [Isaiah 55:1-2]

What is meant, by the Christian Faith?” What is meant by "Believing" and / or, being, "Saved?"

The Christian Scriptures itself, defines for us the Christian Faith. [1 Corinthians 15]

The Christian Faith is not about an introspective hope or some idealistic optimism, but it is a firmly held belief [by intellect and life practice – Acts 8:26-40 ; Matthew 7:13-29] about a special person prophesied [in history] hundreds of years before His birth, life, suffering, death, burial and resurrection. [Following, are a couple of divine prophetic Scriptures to illustrate -- Psalm 22 ; Isaiah 53].

The Christian Faith is not about being perfect or attempting to attain a certain measure of human holiness, but it is about Creator God’s gift to humanity. [John 3:14-21 ; Ephesians 2:8-9]

So, what does, [being] “Saved,” mean?

In short, [being] “Saved,” denotes, being rescued from [sinful] self and from personal sin (s). Creator [Triune] God did not leave His creation without a clue. He provided for us a clear message in His Divine [revelation] book, called the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures – better known, as “The Bible.” [2 Timothy 3:14-17]

“Saved” from sin? Then, what is, “Sin?”

“Sin,” described, in the Bible, is the transgression of the [God’s] law. [1 John 3:4 ; Exodus 20:3-17]

Sin, is the reason our bodies will grow old [baring a sudden accident] and someday [certainly] die. [Genesis 3:1-19 ; Ezekiel 18:20a ; Psalm 90 – esp. Verses 3-10]

Because of sin, there is evil and there are evil people. [Genesis 6:5 ; Psalm 53 ; Ecclesiastes 7:20 ; Romans 3:23]

Sin, results in a corruption of global proportions. [Genesis 3 – esp. Verses, 16-19 ; Romans 8:19-22]

“Sin,” also, separates a sinful human being, from Creator God. [Isaiah 59 – esp. Verse, 2]

Because of the staining traits of sin, there will be no perfection [holiness] in the hereafter, [apart from heaven] for the sinning soul. The only perfection in the hereafter is “Heaven.” Heaven cannot exist with sin – only, holiness. Hence, sin, is the vile “instrument,” that damns a human soul, once a person’s life’s breath is expended from his [her] human body.

The “Antidote” for human sin

The Almighty mercifulness of a [perfect] Holy Creator [Triune] God, cries out for an “Antidote” [rescue] for human sin. [John 3:14-21 ; Romans 5:6-21 ; 1 John 4:9-10]

The divine revelatory Hebrew and Christian Scriptures relate not only about sin; its devastation and eternal damnation consequences [Matthew 25:31-46 – esp. Verses 41 & 46] but also sin’s “Antidote,” (Divine cure). [Isaiah 55:1-7 ; John 3:14-21] And that “Cure,” [rescue plan] is not found in anything global (earthly). Rather it is found in the Divine presence of a promised (Holy Messiah, Jesus Christ. [Genesis 3:15 ; Isaiah 53 ; Hebrews 9:11-15 ; Hebrews 10:1-14]

Part 2 – The Christian Faith: How the saving (believing) process of the Christian Faith takes place (10/19/08)

NOTE: The following message and the related Scriptures below, can be utilized along with: A Suggested Format for Home Worship

“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters….” [Isaiah 55:1-2]

In some Christian circles it is the accepted norm to encourage fellow Christians to give their personal testimonies of the circumstances leading up to their “Conversion.” Also, gratifying to some of these groups is the acceptance of various testimonies being able to relate not only the year of one becoming a Christian, but also the very month and day, down to the particular hour and moment of the “Conversion experience.” The very “Experience” is celebrated so much so, that some Christians have developed a Christian “litmus” test for other Christians. Their contention goes like this: “If you truly are a Christian, then you should know the exact time attending your conversion experience.”

Scripture has no “litmus” test [time frame] for a Christian’s conversion experience:

Certainly there are historical recorded experiences of individual Christians that have come into the Christian Faith. There is no doubt about that, as some Christians have written through diary or journal personal practice the transformation that took them from an unbelieving state into the believing state of being what the Christian Scriptures designate, as being, “Saved.” [Note: Last week’s message dealt with the meaning of the Christian terms: Being “saved,” and, “believing]:”

PART 1 – The Christian Faith – What is meant by “Believing” and / or, being, “Saved?” (10/12/08)

Scripture, itself, records the immediate transformations of certain individuals who went from an unconverted [unbelieving] to a converted [believing] state. Perhaps, the most famous and familiar is that of the Apostle Paul. [Acts 9:1-22 ; Acts 26:1-19]Other well known examples are the Ethiopian eunuch and the Philippian jailer. [Acts 8:26-39 ; Acts 16:16-34]

The Christian conversion experience is not restricted to a certain time frame:

Although there are many examples of Christians knowing the time period of their personal conversion to the Christian Faith from their unconverted [unsaved / unbelieving] state; and, although there are Scriptural recorded examples – the Scripture itself testifies to the reality that coming into the Christian Faith [being converted / saved] can be an experience that can happen without the new Christian becoming aware of it. Such truth is wonderfully explained by the Lord Christ, Himself in His conversation to a religious leader, Nicodemus, who (for fear of the religious establishment) came to Christ, under the cover of darkness. [John 3:1-21] Following [for purposes of this message] is what Christ stated to Nicodemus:

“…..The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” [John 3:8]

Being “Saved” / “Believing” is totally and completely an act that issues forth from the Triune God, Himself:

The conversion process and act, whereby a person who is not a Christian, becomes, a Christian -- is of Divine origin. The Scriptures make this very clear. [Ephesians 2:1-10 ; John 1:13 ; Galatians 1:15-16] Other Scriptures reveal the same. [1 Kings 18:36-37 ; 1 Corinthians 12:3 ; Galatians 1:6 ; 1 Peter 1:3-25 -- Note: Verse, 3 ; Verses, 18-19 and Verse 23]

Note: Please read the short message: “The often overlooked aspect about the ‘New Birth’” (1/20/08):
Also, further note: The Third Article of the Apostle's Creed -- A Concise Explanation

No one or no well meaning Christian should attempt to second guess another Christian’s conversion experience:

I clearly remember a well meaning Christian family member questioning my elderly mother’s Christian Faith. He asked her: “How do you know that you are saved?” To that Mom responded: “Because I believe God’s promises.” What simplicity of response! And, what better response? Mom’s Christian faith was not based upon her own feeling or upon her own experience, but rested totally upon the merits of her Creator God! [Philippians 2:13] Her faith was based upon the Triune God’s written [Holy Scripture] revelation. There was no doubt in her heart, mind and life, but full assurance that what God had revealed, was believed and accepted by her!

The "element" of "Faith" to believe God's Word [The Holy Scriptures] is a God given gift. [Ephesians 2:8] Faith is, as the Bible declares: "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." [Hebrews11:1] Again, I emphasize, that faith is a Divine gift. [Romans 12:3] My mother was confident to declare her [God given] faith in God's trustworthy revelation promises as the Apostle Paul [writing under inspiration of the Holy Spirit] was also confident to declare his faith:

"......I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.”....... [Galatians 2:20-21]

It is so easy for we humans to “second guess” another person – and, in the arena of faith, to second guess their spiritual and eternal status. But we must remember, what the Scripture says – that “Salvation” belongs to the Lord [Psalm 3:7-8 ; Isaiah 43:11 ; Isaiah 45:21-22]

The Gospel of John, Chapter 3:1-21 – Christ must illuminate the needy and sinful human soul. In the Greek language, the phrase in verse 3 is: being born “from above.” This correlates with John 1:12-13. Even though a sinner is commanded to repent and believe, that process initiates from the good and gracious action of a loving Triune God. [Philippians 2:13]

Part 3: The Christian Faith: What are the tell-tale signs that a person has been "saved" [is a Christian believer]? (10/26/08)

NOTE: The following message and the related Scriptures below, can be utilized along with: A Suggested Format for Home Worship

“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters….” [Isaiah 55:1-2]______________________________________________

Christ Himself upon a couple of occasions related to His followers, the characteristics of genuine discipleship. Towards the end of His ministry and [earthly] life, Jesus intimately spoke to His disciples about the “marks” of Christian identity.

The first characteristic is a measurement whereby non-Christians would judge Christians: “…..by this will all men know that you are my disciples; if you have love for one another.” [John 13:35] The second characteristic was the test, whether His followers adhered to His direction: “…..If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed…..” [John 8:31-32]

How can a Christian assure himself of being a true believer?

The New Testament Epistle of 1st John lays out a number characteristics (or, “marks”) whereby Christians can examine their life of faith. Please note that the following list is not necessarily conclusive and not necessarily in descending order:

1) Belief in Christ:

Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. [1 John 5:1]

2) Belief that Christ has come in the flesh:

By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world. [1 John 4:2-3]

3) Obeying (keeping; treasuring) Christ’s commandments:

Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him…. [1 John 3:24a ; Note: John 2:7-11]

4) Christians will not engage in continual [lifestyle] sinning:

Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him. Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. [1 John 2:4-9 – NIV]

This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. [1 John 1:5-10]

5) Abiding in God’s love:

And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him. [1 John 4:16]
My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. [1 John 3:18]

6) Loving the brethren in “deed and in truth:”

We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. [1 John 3:14-18]

7) The testimony of the Holy Spirit living within:

Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us. [1 John 3:19 – See also: 1 John 4:13 and, Romans 8:9-17]

8) Baptism in accordance with Christ’s [most necessary] Command: [Matthew 28:18-20 ; Mark 16:15-16 ; Acts 8:26-40 and Acts 16:1-34] in accordance with Christ’s [most necessary] Command. [Matthew 28:18-20 ; Mark 16:15-16 ; Acts 8:26-40 and Acts 16:1-34]

Christ’s disciples will be continually tempted and face persecution:

If you are a Christian and you are facing daily temptations – that is normal. If you battle your sinful inclinations – that is also normal. If you feel [sinfully] pressured by the politically correct society and culture, – that also is very normal. The Scriptures speak of of three groups of negative spiritual forces [enemies]. They are: The devil; [1 Peter 5:8-9] the world; [Romans 12:2] and the sinful human nature [Romans 7]

Christ promised His disciples, persecution:

It is so simple within our politically correct charged culture and society to feel “out of the ‘loop.’” But, would you rather be a friend of the “world” or, an enemy of God? [James 4:4 ; 1 John 2:15-17] God never promised that being Christ’s disciple would be comfortable. [John 15:18-21 ; 2 Timothy 3:12] Beware when no one criticizes your beliefs and lifestyle. You then had better question your Christian beliefs, practice and testimony, whether they meet Christ’s approval. [Luke 6:26 ; Matthew 7:13-29 ; John 3:14-21]

Being Christ’s disciple is worth the present circumstances and the future eternal gain:

The Apostle Paul writing [Scripture] under the “inspirational” direction of the Holy Spirit, affirmed the Christian Faith and life in this perspective – far better than I could ever explain:

[Philippians 3:7-14 – KJV] – “But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, and be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

[2 Timothy 4:6-8 – KJV] – “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
